We will meet our group and Action Challenge staff at the airport and check in together before boarding our flight to Taiwan.
After collecting our luggage, and exiting the airport, we transfer approximately 1 hour to our hotel in central Miaoli i not far from the western coast that overlooks the Taiwan straight and mainland China. After freshening up we have a welcome lunch and meet our local guides. In the afternoon we have a bike fitting and briefing from our team followed by a welcome dinner to mark the start to an incredible challenge.
After a good nights sleep we are all eager to start riding. Our first challenge will break us in gently as we enter the Miaoli Hills and follow a route that snakes its way through the forested valleys, along the many waterways of the region and avoiding as much as possible the modern sprawl of its cities.
After a typical Taiwanese breakfast we start off on our ride along the city cycle tracks, out of Hsinchu and into the beautiful countryside to the east. The road takes us up to the Shih-Men reservoir where we have a rest stop. From here we take small backroads that follow the route of the Dahan River as much as possible all the way into the centre of Taipei, stopping along the way for lunch at a local restaurant. Once at our comfortable city hotel, we can relax and enjoy the sights of this vibrant city
Today we have a really exciting day of cycling as we head east once again and after a warm up ride we start on a climb that takes us into the stunning Yangmingshan National Park. Initially through small villages and then into forested valleys and over the pass for a great cycling day. We have a thrilling descent back down to coastal levels and a brief cycle along the waterfront before heading into the centre of the city and along its important Port.
Our destination today is the town of Jiaoxi which is popular amongst Taiwanese for its hot springs. Our ride takes us along the seafront for 16km and then we head inland for a sustained 9km climb that will take us 500m above sea level, with incredible views along the coast and into the hills. This is the main event this morning and, along with lunch we have a great descent that follows, to brings us back to the coast for a 25km ride this afternoon. We should get into our comfortable hotel mid afternoon and there will be plenty of time for soaking your cycling muscles in a classic Taiwanese Onsen (Hot Spring Bath).
For our last cycling day we have the toughest challenge yet for us, but its an incredibly beautiful ride. We will be crossing the hills, through valleys and over passes all the way back to our Taipei hotel. Along the way we pass Crocodile lake and the views as we climb above it are one of the best of the whole challenge. From the last pass that we reach it’s a beautiful ride all the way into Taipei for the last time. Tonight we get prepared for the final celebratory meal and mark the end of an incredible challenge.
After breakfast we have some free time and later this afternoon we transfer back to the airport for our afternoon flight to Hong Kong and onwards overnight back to the UK.
