Trek the Most iconic route in south america

The ‘W’ trek in the Torres Del Paine National Park is the iconic challenge in Southern America, consistently being voted in the top 5 trails of the world. Located in Chile’s Southern tip, this 10 day adventure will take you into the heart of one of the great wilderness parks. Come face to face with the native flora and fauna of the Patagonian steppe, such as guanacos, Lamagaia and more. All set against a backdrop of glaciers, stunning trails and, of course, the awesome peaks of the Torres Del Paine.

Day 1 Depart UK

The team will meet at the airport, at the check in zone, 3 hours before departure. Please look out for our trip Leader & Medic in a red ‘Action Challenge’ t-shirt. You don’t need to worry about your tickets as the Action Challenge team will have these ready to give you at the airport. You will just need your passport to hand.

Day 2 Arrive Punta Arenas

On arrival into Santiago, we will take a domestic flight to Punta Arenas, on the Southern tip of Chile. We are met on arrival by our local team and will transfer to get settled into our hotel for the night. Here we will have a group briefing, before we go to a restaurant for dinner. We will then go to bed and get some needed rest.

Day 3 Torres Del Paine National Park

After breakfast, we will begin our transfer to Torres del Paine National Park, which will take approximately 4/5 hours. At a suitable time along the journey, we will stop for a packed lunch. We are dropped off at Pudeto’s Pier where we catch a 40 minute ferry a cross the magnificent Pehoe Lake. Subject to the amount of time that is left today we have a short first trek as an easy loop walk from our camp. Our journey today is an introduction to the wild Patagonian landscape, passing estancias and sheep farming country. This evening we meet the full team that will be with us over the next few days and we have a full briefing before retiring to our tents under a blanket of Patagonian stars.

Day 4 The Grey Glacier

Our first big trekking day will commence following breakfast, and we will begin walking up towards the Grey Glacier for approximately 3/4 hours. From here, we may have our first views of the stunning Southern Patagonian Icecap spilling into Lago Grey. At a suitable time of the journey we will stop to admire the beautiful landscape and enjoy a packed lunch as a group. We will then continue on our journey until we reach the breath-taking mirador. From here, we can watch and admire as chunks of the icecap tumble into the water to form icebergs. A remarkable natural wonder! We will stop here for a break, and soak up the magnificent scenery. You will certainly want to take some photos of possibly  the most photographed spot along the Torres Del Paine trek, and capture the three spiked granite towers mirroring in the turquoise lake. As the day draws to a close, we will then return back to the Paine Grande Camp for an evening meal as a group, before getting some sleep.

Day 5 French Valley

Today, our route takes us along one of the most spectacular cirques in the Paine range. After breakfast, we will begin our trek and will have the opportunity to climb up to a mirador, or viewpoint, which commands views of the mighty Frances Glacier from which the valley derives its name. From here, a magnificent panorama of Glacial Lakes is supplemented by the back of the famous Towers that mark Paine Grand. This is also where we will stop to enjoy some lunch before continuing with our hike into the afternoon. After spending some time admiring the permanent ice of the glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks, we will return down the valley to the Italian Camp to trek the last steeply undulating hours above Lago Nordenskjold to our next camp. This camp is set below the strangely weathered Cuernos del Paine. As evening approaches, we will arrive at our accommodation for the night at Refuge Frances. We will then enjoy a group dinner before we get some well-earned rest.

Day 6 Lake Nordenskjold

After a comfortable night and wholesome breakfast, we will set off on a relatively short easy day hiking following Lago Nordenskjold to Las Torres. The track undulates upwards for some time along the lake, presenting magnificent views of Paine Chico and the Towers ahead of us, and the Cuernos behind. We will stop for some lunch along the route for a rest and re-fuel for our afternoon trek. We then descend for half an hour, crossing several gushing rivers over the rolling forested terrain and then climb steeply away from the lake over a pass. We come to a flat stretch around a small lake and then gradually descend to our Refuge. As the sun begins to set, we will arrive at central camp, where we will have a group dinner before going to bed.

Day 7 Torres Del Paine

Today is perhaps the highlight of our stay in Torres with an early start after breakfast, as we set off up the Torres valley to Las Torres Del Paine. The huge granite towers are a truly magnificent sight. The five-hour trek begins with a steep climb, with the towering 2668m Paine Chico on our left, before descending gradually to the river and the spectacularly situated Chileno refuge. Here, we will stop to admire the views and soak up the scenery whilst enjoying our packed lunch and opportunity to use the facilities. It is a further two and a half hours of tough climbing up the huge glaciated valley to the towers themselves, with the last stretch requiring extra focus as we will be trekking over rocks and boulders.
After spending some time at the towers absorbing the views, we return to our Refuge. Our camp for this evening will be Refuge Torre Central, located in Las Torres area at the beginning of the W Circuit. This will be the final night of the trek, and so this evening will conclude with a traditional celebratory meal in the midst of the national park at Las Torres.

Day 8 Return Punta Arenas

Following breakfast, we will depart our camp for the last time and head out of the park. After an hour and a half, we will stop in Puerto Natales to have a look around our surrounding area and enjoy a tasty lunch. We will then catch our afternoon transfer, which should take approximately 3/4 hours, to Punta Arenas and then make our way to the hotel for the evening. We will then have time to relax before our final group meal where we will be able to reflect on our exciting adventure and magnificent achievement over the last few days. We will then get some much needed rest on our final night in Chile.

Day 9 Punta Arenas Airport

This is the final day of the trip, and after checking out of the hotel, we will transfer as a group to Punta Arenas Airport depending on our flight departure time. We will then catch a flight to Santiago, and from here we will then fly back to London.
