2022 & 2023

If you can trek, you can snow shoe!

This 5 day trip has it all-pretty Pyrenean towns and villages, frozen lakes, snow clad peaks, enchanted wintery forests and 2 nights in a remote mountain refuge! The snow shoe adventure takes us through the 1000 Lakes region as we traverse alpine cirques, cross high passes and weave around it’s many lakes.

The Challenge

Snow scenes & Frozen Lakes

We transfer from Toulouse to the pretty Pyrenean town of Luchon, our comfortable base before and after the 3 day snowshoeing trek. Our snowshoe challenge takes us to the 1000 Lakes region, which we explore over the course of a 3 day journey whilst staying in a remote mountain refuge! You’ll access a remote and quiet frozen high mountain paradise that so few get to experience! We spend 2 nights in the stunning Refuge de Colomers surrounded by the most spectacular frozen and snow covered terrain. Perfect for watching sunsets, sunrises and late night star gazing.

The Experience

Life on the trek

By taking part in one our group treks you will be part of a much bigger team and that’s what makes the experience so special. Supporting each other, laughing together, motivating each other one step of the way. Led by a qualified UK Leader and supported by a UK medic & local experts; you will be hosted in 3*+ hotel accommodation, mountain refuges, great local restaurants, & more ensuring you get a feel of the culture & landscape we journey through. We take care of everything but the flights–leaving you to focus on that finish line!

An Action Challenge trip is much more than a holiday! It brings like-minded people together in fantastic landscapes, provides the best support & great hospitality, and enables the group to take on a tough & unforgettable challenge which forges new friendships, broaden horizons, and leaves you wanting more of life’s adventures!

The blueprint for Action Challenge trip is based on delivering a high quality enjoyable experience – and doing it all safely. An experienced UK Mountain Leader ensures that all aspects of the challenge run to plan – and one of our UK Medics with an expedition med kit is on-hand to look after the group’s wellbeing – enabling everyone to have the best chance of successfully competing their challenge.

We go to great lengths to ensure that we only use the best local organisations to supply the all-important ground logistics and the on-challenge support, catering, and hospitality teams – with experienced guides leading the way on the trails with their deep local knowledge and authentic style.

Like minded people with a similar sense of adventure – but often from very different backgrounds, and with a wide range of experience, ages, levels of fitness, and personal ambitions. Our trips are perfect for individuals, couples, and small groups of friends to join – and then to take on a unique challenge as part of a larger group which shapes & bonds as the adventure unfolds!

Whether its’s the hotels,  restaurants & transfers before & after the main challenge – or the challenge accommodation & meals whilst out on the trails – our all inclusive packages mean that you will get a top quality experience at a great value price! Flights are generally included, but there’s a ‘land only’ option if you’d prefer to book your own – and single supplement accommodation upgrades are available.

The group comes together – takes on a tough challenge together – and then celebrates its achievements in style on the final night of the trip in a local restaurant or hotel, with medals, awards, and a maybe a bit of a party! Many of our participants make new special friends on our trips – and quite a few come back together for another challenge in the following years!

A successful challenge starts with good preparation. The better prepared you are the more confident you’ll be, and the more you’ll enjoy it! Our ‘Challenge App’ will have all the info & details of what to expect on your challenge – and how to prepare for it – and we have optional training walks, training weekends , and a place on one of our UK Ultra Challenge events to get out on the tails and test your fitness, kit, & equipment.

Itinerary & Route

Please note that some details of the itinerary may change, you will be provided with a detailed itinerary once you are signed up to the challenge.

Your AC leader and UK medic will meet you at Toulouse airport, and we will transfer south to the vibrant mountain town of Luchon, the perfect base to master the art of snowshoeing. Once settled in to your local guesthouse, we go through kit lists and there’s the chance to hire anything you might need. After, you may wish to explore the town and rest before the welcome meal, but for anyone keen to get out and stretch their legs, we head out on a local walk, before making our way back for a 3 course meal and briefing from the leader before a good night’s rest.

We begin today by driving to the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. (Luchonis only 7km from the border.) From the top of the pass we descend into the Val d’Aran, and then get snow-shoes and rucksacks on ready for the adventure. We climb up through the Aiguamox valley, stop for a tea break at the Banhs De Tredos, before heading up the valley again to the Refuge de Colomers (2,135m), in an awesome location next to a large lake (frozen at this time of the year) with which the refuge shares its name. We’ll have a briefing on hut protocols and the plan for the next couple of days, then time to enjoy the evening out in the mountains!(Transfer time ~1 hour 20 minutes, snowshoeing time 5-6 hours)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Accom: Refuge de Colomers

Today we continue our exploration of this striking landscape, climbing up towards the Col de Colomers (2,605m). The views are spectacular, with jagged peaks in every direction and sparkling lakes below. Theway up to the Col is a remote pass, and the only way to cross into the stunning glacial cirque below. It’s a tough ascent, but the panoramic views are our reward, not just of the path we’ve just climbed, but theincredible Cirque de Colomers. We make our way back to the refuge for a welcome dinner and an evening under the stars.(Snowshoeing time 6-7 hours)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Today is our final day out on the snowshoes and after bidding adieu to the refuge, we take a circular route around the Estany de Ràtera. Our route twists and turns through forests and alongside lakes, with opensections allowing us to admire the views and appreciate the distances covered. Now that we are seasoned snowshoe-ers, it doesn’t take long to descend back towards the refuge and, after another well-deserved hot brew and a snack, we head further down into the forest and pick a trackfree route down into the valley, where we’re met by our vehicle to transfer back to France, and Bagneres de Luchon, for a celebratory group meal.(Snowshoeing time 5-6 hours)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
