Push yourself further - take on The Saharan Challenge!

It’s 2 marathon distances over 2 days, with an optional 50km Ultra on 2nd day if you’re up for it –  with a fantastic route through the lush Draa Valley down to sun baked dunes on the desert edge, with rugged mountain scenery, and sleeping under the stars in our Bedouin style basecamp. This 6 day trip has it all – a tough challenge, stunning scenery, luxury camping, sun, full support, and a night in Marrakech. An unforgettable Moroccan adventure with some welcome autumn sun!

The Adventure

The UNESCO World Heritage Draa Valley provides a dramatic backdrop for our double marathon distance challenge (or optional 50km om day 2)  across baked rocky trails, through red clay Berber villages, and palmeries, down to the sandy dunes of the mighty Sahara. After a tough day under the Moroccan sun, relax in our private Bedouin campsite with hot showers, dining tents, a bar with cold drinks, entertainment, and luscious local food.

If you’ve done one of our UK Ultra Challenges – you’ll love this unique adventure! There’s the same first class support & hospitality, combined with a great feeling of camaraderie from a group of 130 or so like-minded adventures who are all up for a challenge. Whether you’re a keen walker, or even a would-be ‘Marathon des Sables’ runner, you can join as an individual, with a friend, or as a group, and take the marathons on at your pace. It’s a great value ‘all inclusive’ package – for an unforgettable 2023 Moroccan adventure!

The blueprint for Action Challenge trip is based on delivering a high quality enjoyable experience – and doing it all safely. An experienced UK Mountain Leader ensures that all aspects of the challenge run to plan – and one of our UK Medics with an expedition med kit is on-hand to look after the group’s wellbeing – enabling everyone to have the best chance of successfully competing their challenge.

We go to great lengths to ensure that we only use the best local organisations to supply the all-important ground logistics and the on-challenge support, catering, and hospitality teams – with experienced guides leading the way on the trails with their deep local knowledge and authentic style.

Like minded people with a similar sense of adventure – but often from very different backgrounds, and with a wide range of experience, ages, levels of fitness, and personal ambitions. Our trips are perfect for individuals, couples, and small groups of friends to join – and then to take on a unique challenge as part of a larger group which shapes & bonds as the adventure unfolds!

Whether its’s the hotels,  restaurants & transfers before & after the main challenge – or the challenge accommodation & meals whilst out on the trails – our all inclusive packages mean that you will get a top quality experience at a great value price! Flights are generally included, but there’s a ‘land only’ option if you’d prefer to book your own – and single supplement accommodation upgrades are available.

The group comes together – takes on a tough challenge together – and then celebrates its achievements in style on the final night of the trip in a local restaurant or hotel, with medals, awards, and a maybe a bit of a party! Many of our participants make new special friends on our trips – and quite a few come back together for another challenge in the following years!

A successful challenge starts with good preparation. The better prepared you are the more confident you’ll be, and the more you’ll enjoy it! Our ‘Challenge App’ will have all the info & details of what to expect on your challenge – and how to prepare for it – and we have optional training walks, training weekends , and a place on one of our UK Ultra Challenge events to get out on the tails and test your fitness, kit, & equipment.

Itinerary & Route

The Adventure begins in Marrakech where the group meet and transfer over the Atlas Mountains to our exclusive Bedouin Camp – our Moroccan home for 3 nights. Nestled amongst palm trees in the valley of the Draa river bed, our start line is in the shadows of Mount Kissane – from here we will follow the Draa Valley south back to base camp. After 2 days & 84 or 92 km, with a few up’s & downs en-route, we’ll cross the finish line at the stunning Nakhla Dunes near Zagora on the edge of the imposing Sahara Desert.

11 OCT 2023

You will meet up with the Action Challenge Team and the rest of your challengers at a London Airport for the group flights Marrakech – and then a short transfer to our hotel. Land only participants must arrange for their arrival at the  Marrakech hotel by 4pm. We will share a welcome evening  meal and a briefing on the challenge ahead.

12 OCT 2023

The group will transfer by minibuses to our Bedouin style basecamp on the outskirts of Tizguine, near Zagora. This journey is approx. 7 hours with regular breaks in private minibuses. Once at the camp we will be allocated a tent, have a welcome dinner, and a final briefing on the challenge ahead.

13 OCT 2023

We rise early for breakfast and a 45 minute transfer to the starting line in Afra near Mt Kissane. After a group warm up we start the Saharan Challenge! We begin in an incredible lunar landscape before re-joining the river to arrive at our first rest stop. From here we pass through mud brick villages, palm trees and date plantations. After lunch the route takes us through the narrowest part of the Draa Valley between 1,500m peaks to our afternoon rest stop and finally arriving at our Bedouin Camp. We have a group buffet style dinner this evening before a briefing and well deserved rest!

14 OCT 2023

Starting early we begin our trek by passing through a number of small villages and palm plantations. Here we’ll find our next rest stop with snacks and drinks. Continuing our trek we veer away from the river, we’ll walk through desert landscapes before arriving at the fortress of Beni Zoli for lunch. Our route follows a network of irrigation canals through a patchwork of fields growing a profusion of fruit and vegetables. The last 10 km of the route sees us leave the fertile fields and head out into the Nakhla sand dunes – and there’s an extra 8 km for those up for the full 50 km Ultra!  Cross the finish line and celebrate our fantastic achievement with a glass of fizz and a medal. We transfer back to camp, for a final night in dunes & an epic celebration dinner.

15 OCT 2023

After breakfast we set off for the 8 hour drive to Marrakech, stopping for lunch en-route. We check in to our hotel and have time to freshen up before we enjoy a three course meal of local Moroccan dishes. This is a chance for the whole group to get together and reflect on the tremendous achievements of the past few days.

16 OCT 2023

After a welcome sleep and breakfast, buses will depart for the airport early, in time for your flight back to London. Please note that if you have not booked flights with us you will be responsible for making your own arrangements to the airport. Flights will be departing in the morning time, to arrive back in London for midday/early afternoon.
