Walk, run or cycle at your own pace, tracking progress, unlocking milestones, and staying motivated. Go solo or as a team and see how far you can go. Perfect for training or a summer fitness focus. This challenge takes in some of our real-world challenge destinations, and hints at a new one coming soon…
Sign up, pick your distance and let us know how you will take it on. Track your distances manually, or link in with your favourite tracker (Garmin, Strava and Fitbit are currently supported). The challenge starts on 1st August, and you can join in until 31st August. You have until 30th September to complete your chosen distance. Take it on solo, or for the longer distances why not get a team together and see how far you can go!

Xi'an
City Loop
100km
Take on a 100km journey rooted in Xi’an, the ancient starting point of the Silk Road. Once the capital of multiple Chinese dynasties, it was the eastern gateway for trade, culture and ideas moving west. Caravans of silk, spices and ceramics began their journey here, making this historic city the foundation of a route that would shape centuries of global exchange. You can visit Xi’an as an extension on the Great Wall of China Trek.
Samarkand to Bukhara
250km
Follow one of the Silk Road’s great trading corridors. Once key centres of learning, commerce and empire, these cities flourished under Persian, Turkic and Mongol influence. Merchants, scholars and explorers passed through for centuries, shaping culture and trade across continents. This route captures the legacy of a region that sat at the crossroads of the ancient world, and gives a hint for a new destination coming soon…Â
Taskhent to Samarkand
500km
This is a 500km journey linking Tashkent and Samarkand, two key centres of the Silk Road. Tashkent grew as a strategic hub along ancient caravan routes, while Samarkand became one of the greatest cities of the Timurid Empire. For centuries, merchants, scholars and rulers shaped this region into a centre of power, learning and exchange at the heart of Central Asia. Again, this is hint for our next new destination!
Kathmandu to Bhutan
1000km
A lesser known branch, linking two Himalayan kingdoms shaped by centuries of religion, trade and isolation. Kathmandu thrived as a crossroad cultures, while Bhutan developed its own identity, guided by mountains and monastic tradition. This route reflects a quieter edge of the Silk Road, where commerce and spirituality met. You can visit these destinations on our Everest Base camp, Mera Peak or Bhutan Druk Path challenges.
Ashgabat to Petra
3000km
An epic 3000km journey, spanning a vast stretch of the Silk Road linking Central Asia to the Middle East. This route reflects centuries of empire, trade and cultural exchange, as goods and ideas moved between Persian, Hellenistic and Arab worlds. Xi'an to Petra

Not for the faint of heart. The full Silk Road challenge is a 7000km journey from Xi’an to Petra, stretching from ancient China to the heart of the Middle East. This vast route traces the complete arc of historic trade, linking empires, cultures and civilisations over thousands of kilometres. Designed for cyclists or on foot teams only, it captures the scale and legacy of this defining route.
For this challenge, we’re also proud to support Mind, the mental health charity. Mind provides vital information, advice and support to anyone experiencing a mental health problem, while campaigning for better mental health services and greater understanding across society.
Join our Facebook Group and share your Silk Road Virtual journey using #SilkRoadSelfie. Get creative! Dress up in themed kit inspired by ancient traders, recreate a “caravan” with your team, or mark milestones with location-style shots on your local routes. Capture team efforts, solo progress, local highlights or your biggest distances.
We’ll pick our favourites, and the winners will receive a £100 kit hire voucher for their next challenge.

Creating a team is simple and can be done as part of the registration process.
If you’re registering after a team has already been created, simply select Join a Team during registration and choose the relevant team from the list. Each member’s activity will then count towards the shared team distance target.

Please note: In all cases, Ultra Britain only requests read-only access to your activity data. No information can be edited, and nothing will be posted to your account. Only activities marked as public can be imported into the challenge platform.
If you don’t want to connect Strava, Garmin or Fitbit, you can add your activities manually through your Ultra Britain account.
Your progress will then be added to your challenge total and reflected on the challenge map. Manual entry is a great option if you don’t use a compatible fitness tracker or prefer to record activities yourself.

The Silk Road Virtual Challenge is about getting active and setting a big goal for late summer. It’s also opportunity to make a difference along the way.
Participants are welcome to fundraise for any charity or cause that matters to them, whether that’s a local community organisation, a national charity, or a cause with a personal connection.
