The Experience

Life on the Cycle

On an Action Challenge trip, you’ll be part of a team which takes on an adventure together – and that’s what makes the experience so special. Getting to know others, supporting each other when the going gets tough, laughing together & the new friendships that will stay with you for many years. Led by a UK Leader and supported by a Medic overseeing the group’s wellbeing – you’ll be in safe hands, and our expert local logistics team & guides will ensure it all runs like clockwork. These are ‘fully inclusive’ trips – leaving you to focus on your challenge and enjoy it!

An Action Challenge trip is much more than a holiday! It brings like-minded people together in fantastic landscapes, provides the best support, and enables the group to take on a tough & unforgettable challenge which forges new friendships, broadens horizons, and leaves you wanting more of life’s adventures!

The blueprint for the Action Challenge trip is based on delivering a high-quality enjoyable experience – and doing it all safely. An experienced UK Leader ensures that all aspects of the challenge run to plan – and one of our UK Medics with an expedition med kit is on hand to look after the group’s wellbeing – enabling everyone to have the best chance of completing their challenge.

We go to great lengths to ensure that we only use the best local organisations to supply the all-important ground logistics and the on-challenge support, catering, and hospitality teams – with experienced guides leading the way on the trails guided by their deep local knowledge and authentic style.

We appeal to like-minded people with a similar sense of adventure – but often from very different backgrounds, and with a wide range of experience, ages, levels of fitness, and personal ambitions. Our trips are perfect for individuals, couples, and small groups of friends to join –to take on a unique challenge as part of a larger group which shapes & bonds as the adventure unfolds!

Whether it’s the hotels, restaurants & transfers before & after the main challenge – or the challenge accommodation & meals whilst out on the trails – our all-inclusive packages mean that you will get a top-quality experience at a great value price! Flights are generally included, but there’s a ‘land only’ option if you’d prefer to book your own – and single supplement accommodation upgrades are available.

Visas- You must organise your Visa yourself prior to arrival in Kenya. Advice on how to apply for this will be provided to you once booked onto the challenge in the App.

The group comes together – takes on a tough challenge together – and then celebrates its achievements in style on the final night of the trip in a local restaurant or hotel, with medals, awards, and a bit of a party! Many of our participants make new special friends on our trips – and quite a few come back together for another challenge in the following years!

A successful challenge starts with good preparation. The better prepared you are the more confident you’ll be, and the more you’ll enjoy it! Our ‘Challenge App’ will have all the info & details of what to expect on your challenge – and how to prepare for it – and we have optional training walks, training weekends, and a 50km place on one of our UK Ultra Challenge events to get out on the trails and test your fitness, kit, & equipment.

Itinerary & Route

We depart Heathrow on a day flight to Nairobi. We arrive late in the evening so we transfer directly to our comfortable hotel in Nairobi. The following day we transfer you to Narok in the Maasai Mara to prepare bikes and perform a warm-up loop ride.

After breakfast, cycle day two will commence. Our ride today starts early, as although it is a shorter distance, we are mainly on African dirt roads which will be a much tougher challenge to cycle on. We keep our eyes peeled today as there is a good possibility of seeing a great range of safari animals including giraffes, wildebeests, buffalo, elephants, gazelle, zebra, and other foragers and grazers that roam the savannah plains. We will be making our way around part of the Loita Hills in the Siana Conservancy, which is the predominant home to some herds of wildebeests and zebra. It will be strenuous, but worth every minute for the stunning scenery. We will then stop at an appropriate time of the day for lunch and a rest. Our ride will continue into the afternoon until we reach the village of Oloolamuitia. This is extremely close to where we find our tented camp, to end at the southern tip of the Maasai Mara close to the border with Tanzania. Once settled in, we will have a chance to relax before enjoying an evening meal and getting some well-earned sleep.

The day will start with an early breakfast before we set off for another exciting day of cycling. After a small climb this morning, the rest of our ride is mainly downhill as we cross back through this famous Safari section taking in river crossings and cycling along smooth gravel roads. The route incorporates highlights of a Maasai Village, and if we are lucky, we should be able to see hippos in their natural habitat. We will arrive in Talek in time to enjoy lunch, and the opportunity to relax and recover. This afternoon will be kept free to enjoy at your leisure or you may wish to take an optional afternoon safari to experience the incredible animal life of the area. The evening will conclude with a group dinner before getting some much-needed rest. Hopefully, we can expect to fall asleep to the sounds of African wildlife.

Cycle day 4 will commence after another group breakfast. Today, we have a big ride on dirt roads as we cross over two conservancies – The Olara Olek and the Mara North Conservancy to arrive at Mara Rianta. This will hopefully be one of the best days for animal sightings, with everyone keeping their eyes peeled for a glimpse of an elephant. Please be aware that we will have a support team for full protection. The animal sightings we will experience are jaw-dropping, but we don’t want to disrupt them in their natural habitat. At around midday, we will stop to soak up the scenery and enjoy some lunch. Our ride will resume post-lunch until we eventually reach our accommodation for the evening. The evening will conclude with a group dinner before getting some well-earned rest.

Today is the final cycling day of the challenge. Following breakfast, we will set off directly from the hotel on a ride that will take us on a 60km loop. We will immediately cross the Mara River, whose origin starts in the Kenyan Highlands and flows 395km into Lake Victoria. Our big challenge today is the steep 250m climb onto the great Mara North, with its amazing views back down over this incredible Maasai ecosystem. We will then continue cycling through the stunning Oloisukut Conservancy. Along the route, we will stop for a rest and to enjoy some lunch before continuing into the afternoon. As the sun begins to set, we will arrive at our accommodation and have some time to relax before preparing for our celebratory evening. Tonight, we can enjoy the hospitality of the hosts and with a special meal together, appreciate a drink (or two) as we reflect on our incredible achievements. We will then end our evening with some much-needed sleep in this comfortable accommodation.

This will be our final day in beautiful Kenya. For those who are able or who wish to, there will be a pre-sunrise Safari included to hopefully catch a glimpse of the predators on their morning hunt for food. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience!  The group will have some free time to relax and soak up the surroundings. After we check out of the lodge, we will be transferring 5-6 hrs by road back to Nairobi. Upon arrival at the airport, we will check in for our return flight back to the UK. The next morning, we will land back in the UK.

e-bike rental

Not everyone is a regular cyclist – or perhaps you simply want the option to relax and take in the scenery. That’s why we offer e-bike rental on our cycle challenges. These lightweight mountain bikes come with a small electric motor that can be charged each evening – and will give you the option of a power boost on uphill sections, or the ability to ease off the pedals on the flat.

You can reserve your e-bike when registering, or contact us later to add it to your booking.

How it works...

SELF FUNDING

It’s like paying for an all-inclusive holiday.

You pay the registration deposit. The final balance for the trip cost will be due no later than 10 weeks before your departure date

If you want to fundraise for charity, you may still do this separately – either on or offline. All fundraising will be a direct donation to your chosen charity. Please contact them for more information.

How it works...

CHARITY FUNDRAISING

This option lets you pay some of the trip cost yourself, including the registration deposit. You then fundraise on top for a chosen charity.

Action Challenge will invoice your charity for 50% the trip cost 12 weeks before departure.

You must complete 80% of your fundraising by 12 weeks before departure, with the remaining 20% completed 4 weeks after departure.

Let us know what charity you want to support when registering so that we can set up your agreement.
